Valerian produces dose-dependent sedation and hypnosis. Commercially available preparations may be standardized to valerenic acid. 124 Valerian contains many compounds acting synergistically, but the sesquiterpenes are the primary source of valerian’s pharmacologic effects. It is used as a sedative, particularly in the treatment of insomnia, and virtually all herbal sleep aids contain valerian.
